Cladders, also called cladding installers or cladding fixers, fit external cladding systems to buildings across the UK. With 16 live cladding vacancies on SiteJobs as of October 2026 and hundreds more listed on job boards like Indeed and CV-Library, cladding installation is one of the most active specialist construction trades in the country. The Building Safety Act 2022 and the ongoing cladding remediation programme have created sustained demand for qualified cladders to remove dangerous ACM panels and install compliant replacement systems. What Does a Cladder Do?

Cladders install the external envelope of buildings - the weatherproofing and insulating layer that wraps a structure. According to the official CSCS occupation and qualifications list, cladding is broken down into several distinct specialisms:

  • Roof Sheeting and Cladding: Installing profiled metal, fibre cement, or composite roof and wall sheeting on industrial and agricultural buildings. NVQ Diploma Level 2 in Cladding Occupations (Construction) - Roof Sheeting and Cladding.
  • Specialised Cladding and Rainscreen Systems: Installing ventilated rainscreen facades, including aluminium composite panels, high-pressure laminate panels, terracotta, stone, and timber cladding on commercial and residential buildings. NVQ Diploma Level 2 in Cladding Occupations (Construction) - Specialised Cladding and Rainscreen Systems.
  • Fabric and Membrane Cladding: Installing tensile fabric and membrane cladding systems. NVQ Diploma Level 2 in Innovative/Modern Methods of Construction (Construction) - Fabric and Membrane Cladding.
  • Hygienic Cladding: Installing PVC hygienic wall cladding in commercial kitchens, hospitals, laboratories, and food processing facilities.
  • Stone Cladding: Installing natural stone cladding panels. NVQ Diploma Level 2 in Stonemasonry (Construction) - Stone Cladding.

The day-to-day work involves measuring and cutting cladding panels to size, fixing them to the building substrate using brackets, rails, and fixings, installing insulation and breather membranes behind the cladding, sealing joints and weatherproofing, and working from drawings and specifications. Cladders work at height on scaffolds, MEWPs, or mast climbers, and the job demands a head for heights.

Rates are highest in London and the South East, where cladding remediation work on high-rise residential buildings is concentrated. Cladders who hold NVQ Level 3 and can install complex rainscreen systems command the highest day rates. Night shift work, common on cladding remediation projects to avoid disrupting residents, typically pays a 20-30% premium.

What Qualifications and Cards Do You Need?

  1. CSCS Blue Skilled Worker Card - mandatory for site access on virtually all UK construction projects. According to the official CSCS website, the Blue Skilled Worker card requires an NVQ Level 2 in a construction-related occupation and a passed CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. The CITB test costs £23.50 and is booked through citb.co.uk. See our guides on booking the Operatives test and booking the Specialist test.
  2. NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Cladding Occupations - the standard qualification for cladders. There are two main pathways: Roof Sheeting and Cladding, and Specialised Cladding and Rainscreen Systems. The NVQ is assessed on site through portfolio evidence - photographs, video, and professional discussion - with no college attendance and no exam. Training providers offer the qualification at approximately £850-£1,200 + VAT, typically completed in 3-4 months through on-site assessment (OSAT).
  3. NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Cladding Occupations - for experienced cladders who lead jobs and install complex systems. The Level 3 supports a Gold CSCS Advanced Craft card.
  4. CSCS Green Labourer Card - entry-level card for those new to the trade. Requires the CITB Operatives test and a one-day Health and Safety Awareness course. See our guide on passing the CSCS test.

Before booking any training, check which CSCS card you need using the CSCS Card Finder tool.

The Building Safety Act 2022 and Cladding Remediation

The Grenfell Tower fire on 14 June 2017, which killed 72 people, revealed that large numbers of UK buildings had been clad in dangerously combustible materials. The resulting cladding crisis led to the Building Safety Act 2022, described by the CSCS as "the most significant change to building and fire safety regulation in a generation."

The Act created the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) within the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and introduced a new regulatory framework for higher-risk buildings (those 18 metres or taller, or at least 7 storeys). Key impacts for cladders:

  • Cladding remediation work: The government has committed over £5 billion to fund the removal and replacement of unsafe ACM (aluminium composite material) cladding on high-rise residential buildings. This has created thousands of cladding jobs nationwide.
  • Gateway approvals: Building work on higher-risk buildings must pass through three gateways - planning, pre-construction, and completion - with the BSR signing off at each stage. Cladding systems must meet stringent fire safety standards.
  • Golden thread of information: Building owners must maintain a digital record of all safety-critical information, including cladding materials, fire safety features, and maintenance history. Cladders must document their work to feed into this record.
  • Competence requirements: The Act emphasises dutyholder competence. Principal contractors must ensure that all workers on higher-risk buildings are appropriately qualified and carded. A CSCS card alone may not be sufficient - the NVQ behind it must be relevant to the work being done.

The Cladding Safety Scheme, administered by Homes England, funds the replacement of unsafe cladding on residential buildings 11-18 metres tall. The Building Safety Fund covers buildings 18 metres and above. Both schemes are driving demand for qualified cladders.

Health and Safety for Cladders

Cladding installation involves several specific health and safety risks. The key legislation:

  • Work at Height Regulations 2005: Cladders frequently work at height on scaffolds, MEWPs, and mast climbers. The regulations require that work at height is properly planned, supervised, and carried out by competent persons. Full text at legislation.gov.uk. See our guide on working at height.
  • Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015): Applies to all construction work. Principal contractors must ensure that workers are competent and that risks are managed. Full text at legislation.gov.uk. See our guide on working at perimeter edge.
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH): Applies to sealants, adhesives, and cleaning agents used in cladding installation. Full text at legislation.gov.uk.
  • Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 2022: Employers must provide suitable PPE including FFP3 respiratory protection when cutting cladding panels. See our guide on PPE in construction.

Key hazards for cladders include:

  • Falls from height: The most serious risk. Use scaffolds, MEWPs, or mast climbers. Never work from an unsecured ladder while carrying cladding panels.
  • Dust and airborne particles: Cutting aluminium, cement board, or fibre cement cladding generates harmful dust. Wear FFP3 respiratory protection and use dust extraction.
  • Manual handling: Cladding panels can be large and heavy. Use panel lifters, vacuum lifters, and two-person lifts.
  • Weather: Cladding installation is weather-dependent. High winds make working at height with large panels dangerous. Rain makes surfaces slippery and can compromise sealant curing.
  • Hot works: Some cladding systems require hot works for welding seams or torching. Follow hot work permit procedures and have fire extinguishing equipment ready.

How to Become a Cladder

There are three main routes into cladding installation in the UK:

  1. On-the-job training: Many cladders start as a cladder's mate, learning alongside experienced installers. Once competent, complete the NVQ Level 2 through on-site assessment (OSAT) to get your Blue CSCS card - no college attendance required. This is the most common route.
  2. College course: Complete a Level 2 Diploma in Cladding Occupations at a further education college, then find work and complete the NVQ on site. CITB offers apprenticeships through citb.co.uk/apprenticeships.
  3. Experienced worker route: If you have years of experience but no formal qualification, complete the NVQ Level 2 through portfolio assessment. Training providers assess from evidence on jobs you already work on.
